Note

The first movement is an extremely fast tempo sonata form in which two trumpets are always intertwined in canon. The second theme of the first movement is a homage of Haydn's trumpet concerto leading directly to the second movement "Passacaglia". Here, the melody of "Chocolate d'Amore" is transformed and quoted in the middle section, and continues to the third movement. The six-eight rhythm of the timpani brings back the first theme of the first movement and the melody of the second movement, which alternate and interact with each other to conclude the piece.

Written for "Cheer for Art" project, sponsored by Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Ottaviano Cristofoli (Japan Philharmonic Orchestra solo trumpet) is from Italy, and Zachary Guiles (former Richmond Symphony Orchestra principal trombone) is from the United States. Their nationalities inspired me to arrange themes from "Madame Butterfly", an opera by G. Puccini which combines elements of American, Italian, and Japanese cultures.
In this publication, music develops primarily in the order of the opera story, but ends with the famous love duet from Act 1 so that it does not end in tragedy.
In this sheet music, I have included Italian lyrics for the melody sung by Madame Butterfly and Pinkerton. Performers can draw on the text to inform their expression and phrasing. I hope you will enjoy the chance to sing these rich melodies on brass instruments!
Recommended to be played on C Trumpet, however, a Bb Trumpet part is also included.

Scritto per il progetto del Governo Metropolitano di Tokyo, "Cheer for Art" ed eseguito da Ottaviano Cristofoli, prima tromba solista della Japan Philarmonic Orchestra e Zac Guiles, gia primo trombone dell'orchestra sinfonica di Richmond. Le loro nazionalita mi hanno ispirato ad arrangiare i celebri temi dell'opera "Madama Butterfly". Un'opera dove Giacomo Puccini unisce elementi di cultura americani, Italiani e Giapponesi.
In questa pubblicazione la musica si sviluppa principalmente seguendo la trama dell'opera ma si conclude con il famoso duetto d'amore dall'atto primo, cosi da non finire in tragedia.
In questa partitura ho incluso i testi in Italiano delle parti di Butterfly e Pinkerton. L'esecutore puo cogliere dal testo le espressioni e i fraseggi legati alla lingua Italiana. Spero che vi divertirete ad eseguire queste meravigliose melodie con i vostri strumenti.

Note	In 2017, I wrote an oboe sonata at the request of MIYAMURA Kazuhiro (assistant concertmaster of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra) who wanted “a tonal sonata in the lineage of Saint-Saens and Poulenc”. After the premiere, the video of the performance was uploaded to the internet. This caught the eye of ISOBE Shuhei (former principal clarinet of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo), who commissioned me a clarinet sonata. Composers such as Brahms, Saint-Saens and Poulenc have left masterpieces in this genre ? all mature works composed in the last years of their lives. So I felt under a lot of pressure and three years went by without much progress. Finally in December 2020, I discarded the ideas I was working on and started from scratch. The work was completed on 10 January, 2021. The sonata is formed of four movements. The overall structure is relatively simple: slow-fast-slow-fast in the style of a Baroque sonata. Although the first movement is in the minor, it is not gloomy but should be played “chiaramente” (clearly). The various motifs that appear here shape the subsequent movements. The second movement is written in the style of a scherzo. In rondo form, the motifs from the first movement are developed into episodes. The third movement continues without a break, and unfolds like a chaconne. (If the performer chooses to play the first two movements only, go to the “for ending” section.) The fourth movement is also in rondo form, but at the end it develops into a fugal section. After most of the motifs appear, the opening is reminisced in Adagio, and the work ends softly. None of the movements is actually in “sonata form”, but as all are elaborately developed, I feel it is appropriate to call the work a sonata. Ideally the four movements should be performed seamlessly, but one can take a break between the first and second movements, and between the third and fourth movements. I have only indicated the basic dynamics and Agogik in the score. The melody should be played with plenty of expression. The premiere took place on 22 March, 2021, at the Artist Salon “Dolce”, with the composer at the piano. It’s quite touching that the premiere of this work falls on the centenary of Saint-Saens’ masterpiece.

Note	Program Notes from the Premiere It was in late 2014 when oboist Kazuhiro Miyamura approached me in earnest and commissioned me to compose an oboe sonata that was "tonal,without quotations, and in the lineage of Saint=saens and Poulenc". Traditionally, the "sonata", especially in chamber music, has always been an important genre in which a composer would demonstrate his skills. Equally, it has been an important repertoire for instrumentalists. However, in today's rapidly-changing world , how much demand is there for the sonata? These days, people prefer lighter music, film or theatre-type music, or even "video game music" -style works and music accompanied by video. Personally, I consider that Western music is an art where a given length of time is constructed purely by sounds, and this rich world cannot be discussed without the "sonata". This single-movement oboe sonata, which lasts a little over 13 minutes, has a multi-layered structure: it is constructed in large-scale sonata form but also includes a scherzo, slow movement and a fugal rondo within the movement. Everything derives from the opening oboe melody. All the melodies that appear in this work are quite ordinary, but the trick is that they appear first in developed (or variation) form and only later do they appear in complete form. There is one quotation at the very end - from my own song. This means that the sonata is in fact heading towards this song.
