Here I present Bach's Partita for unaccompanied flute with continuo realization which can be also be performed as concert repertoire. I have attempted to emulate Bach's harmonic style by imaging how he would have accompanied these works if had been asked to. Some may object to the choice of certain harmonies, but the whole point of this publication is to increase interest in performing with a strong sense of harmony through such a process. Furthermore, in Bach's unaccompanied works, there are often multiple voices within a single part. So I have also provided a "duet version" which will help clarify the flow of the voices. Note	In 2017, I wrote an oboe sonata at the request of MIYAMURA Kazuhiro (assistant concertmaster of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra) who wanted “a tonal sonata in the lineage of Saint-Sa$00EBns and Poulenc”. After the premiere, the video of the performance was uploaded to the internet. This caught the eye of ISOBE Shuhei (former principal clarinet of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo), who commissioned me a clarinet sonata. Composers such as Brahms, Saint-Sa$00EBns and Poulenc have left masterpieces in this genre $2013 all mature works composed in the last years of their lives. So I felt under a lot of pressure and three years went by without much progress. Finally in December 2020, I discarded the ideas I was working on and started from scratch. The work was completed on 10 January, 2021. The sonata is formed of four movements. The overall structure is relatively simple: slow-fast-slow-fast in the style of a Baroque sonata. Although the first movement is in the minor, it is not gloomy but should be played “chiaramente” (clearly). The various motifs that appear here shape the subsequent movements. The second movement is written in the style of a scherzo. In rondo form, the motifs from the first movement are developed into episodes. The third movement continues without a break, and unfolds like a chaconne. (If the performer chooses to play the first two movements only, go to the “for ending” section.) The fourth movement is also in rondo form, but at the end it develops into a fugal section. After most of the motifs appear, the opening is reminisced in Adagio, and the work ends softly. None of the movements is actually in “sonata form”, but as all are elaborately developed, I feel it is appropriate to call the work a sonata. Ideally the four movements should be performed seamlessly, but one can take a break between the first and second movements, and between the third and fourth movements. I have only indicated the basic dynamics and Agogik in the score. The melody should be played with plenty of expression. The premiere took place on 22 March, 2021, at the Artist Salon “Dolce”, with the composer at the piano. It’s quite touching that the premiere of this work falls on the centenary of Saint-Sa$00EBns’ masterpiece.
