Azzurra, meaning blue in Italian, is a colour of the flag of Friuli Province where my ‘Trumpet Concerto’ was premiered. It is also where Mr. Ottaviano Cristofoli (Solo trumpet player of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra) who served as a soloist of the concerto was born. ‘Trumpet Concerto’ is a single, fifteen minute movement but it consists of three parts. This ‘Azzurra (Blue Air) corresponds to the second part. In ‘Trumpet Concerto’, this part is played by Flugelhorn. Ottaviano plays a trumpet beautifully, like a singer. Therefore, this melody is in G. Verdi or G. Donizetti style. This being an homage to the great Italian composers. Also of interest is that the name Verdi has the meaning of ‘green’; however this isnt' the reason that I titled this piece ‘Blue’. |

An opening percussion passage leads into a saxophone cadenza designed to display the soloist's technical skill. As the cadenza soars to a peak the ensemble makes a dynamic
entrance. The contrast between the rhythmic music of the ensemble and the drawn-out notes of the saxophone brings the opening section to a climax.. This is followed by a quieter piu mosso section featuring woodwinds and saxophone, then the saxophone playing against the ensemble. Next there is anoter saxophone cadenza backed by muted trumpets and climaxed by an emphatic statement by the percussion. After a brief return to piu mosso and contrastive sections a rhythmic section backed by the percussion begins, the saxophone playing sometimes swith the ensemble and sometimes against it, and sometimes improvissing.. The final section incorporates jazz elements. Following a sustained Bb chord, the concerto closes with a cadenza accompanied by percussion instruments improvising in the style of traditional Japanese music. [Subliminal Festa KOCD-0401] |

Composed in 30 April 1988. Commissioned by the Harmo Saxophone Quartet. This piece consists of four movements as in tradition. Yet, breaking away from tradition, as all four movements may also be interpreted as one “sonata”. At the time, it was my main focus to allow my imagination to develop the short motifs as far and wide as I could. The 1st movement, or, the exposition when taken as a sonata, is a relatively short movement, and presents all the essential elements for the upcoming movements. The next three movements are performed continuously with no breaks in between. Lento, the 2nd movement, begins with the notes B-A-C-H (Bb-A-C-B in English system) on the baritone saxophone, and gradually unfolds as some kind of a “song” with this motif. Along the way, similar to “Zweisamkeit” composed in 1982 for the alto saxophone, the motif is presented in free tempo but with heightened tension. The 3rd movement has a developing triplet-motif, followed by the 4th movement, which ends with a brief recapitulation of the 1st movement. |

Composed in 30 Dec 1990. Commisioned by Trouv$00E8re Quartet Following a visit to Egypt in 1988, I started developing an interest in “microtones”, something that are often found in ethnic music. Although it is commonplace for microtones to exist in their respective ethnic music, they appear to sound distorted from the Western musical perspective. The 3rd and 4th movements of this piece were composed with such “microtones”, and feature improvisational performance done in heterophony. It is almost safe to say that in music from various ethnicities, the perfect fifth interval exists as a common element. In the seven-note scale of Thai music, there is a strong foundation for the perfect fifth can be heard. As such, the temperament in the 2nd and 4th movements of this piece can be said to be close to that of Thai music. The notes are divided equivalently into five between the C and G of Western scale, resulting in a sound that constitutes to neither a major, nor a minor scale. The notes ascending from G to C are divided into four equivalents, seemingly with a leading note, or rather similar to the sound in the Mixolydian mode. On the musical score, pitch deviations are given in cents (a semitone is 100 cents). In addition, quarter tones, which are half of a semitone, are also used, most notably as clusters in the beginning of this piece and can be evidently heard throughout. Similar to Saxophone Quartet No.1, this piece also consists of a relatively short first movement and last movement. From the 2nd to the 5th movement, each movement is built for the baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, and alto saxophone respectively, featuring the characteristics and performing techniques unique to each of those instruments. Saxophone Quartets No. 1 and 2, both share the focus of maintaining traditional elements while challenging to break away from tradition, and even aimed to incorporate some Japanese elements as well. A similar composition would be my Symphony for wind band composed in 1990. I express my utmost gratitude to Quartet Hayate for performing these pieces, brimming with youthful desire and enthusiasm on this occasion of significant importance to myself. |
